Renovation Revolution Chapter 2 – The Vision

Renovation Revolution Chapter 2 – The Vision

The Vision
Every remodel project whether you are planning it or not has to start out with a vision and every remodel project is much like a story, it has a beginning, a middle, and an ending. Often, actually always, it’s the planning in the beginning the dictates the ending. When you hear somebody tell you” if they had only known in the beginning” well then you know it wasn’t planned very well at the outset. Also, the idea that there is any predictability what so ever when you’re uncovering an existing house, deconstructing structural and mechanical elements is a fool’s errand. The fact is, houses are built to stay the way they are not to be remodeled, the reality is when you go in and disturb things that have been working and holding up for years and years you’re actually disturbing the stability of an existing structure. This is why it is vital that when you plan your vision for your remodel you have realistic expectations and experienced people performing the job. Pretty pictures in magazines and on the Internet are fantastic for ideas and can often be incorporated into your home plan or vision. That’s not to say all things are equal because they are not and since they are not you have to use reasonable judgment and have the benefit of experienced people help you make these decisions. And you need to listen to their advice and be prepared to move to the next idea if your original vision isn’t practical. I’ve had so many people make such huge mistakes by trying to force designs on a house that simply were not going to work. Yes, money cures all ills when it comes to a remodel, you can throw tons of money at it and eventually get it the way you want it but then you have to ask yourself was it really worth it? One of the most common things I hear people say is we should have just built a new house. Of course I don’t subscribe to this theory or attitude Because I love the challenge and the creativity of making that house more wonderful than it’s ever been and that’s always my vision at the end.

So carefully consider your vision but make sure that you can convey it properly to the people that are going to be doing the work, they cannot read your mind and no two people see things the same way, that’s what makes us unique. A proper plan must be drawn so that everybody sees your vision and all the parts can be put in the right places. A common problem in remodeling is that people expect us to be able to create something in an old home that matches their vision and then they’re disappointed when we see it differently in our minds eye. An investment in a professional to create your plan will save you money, will save you disappointment, and it will absolutely save you time. Not to mention the fact it’s required now in most cities that you have a plan to show them to get a permit.
