14 Mar MY CAN OPENER AWAITS
Today, I had lunch with an old friend. As to be expected our conversation quickly veered to my radio show, we were laughing so hard the waiter had to come back twice to get our order. We talked about how social media has become the primary vehicle by which we all communicate and how many wheels it roles on and how old fellas like us are being drawn from the dark ages of pagers and dial up internet.
Recently, I watched a video of a group of teens surrounding a young woman in a classroom, attempting to learn how to use a hand crank can opener. After what seemed an eternity, the bewildered young woman eventually maneuvered the opener enough to crack the surface of the can much to the joy of the on lookers, bringing the deathly silent crowd to a roar and receiving a standing ovation. This lack of common sense logic about the use of an everyday object I grew up using was as shocking to me, how could something so simple be so difficult for an intelligent person to figure out? My first thought was, how will these people survive without electricity? Then it occurred to me that it was me that is having adjust to their world, not the other way around. All this time I’ve been keeping one foot planted firmly in the past where it feels safe, but now I have to jump into a whole new world with both feet. It’s more than just learning a new language, it’s finding your way through a forest after the sun’s almost below the horizon. Now this old dog can learn new tricks and I know it’s always darkest just before the dawn so I’ve looking forward to the challenges – my can opener awaits!
